Past human environments:

a source page on studies in Latvia

This site has a bibliography of published sources on past human environments in Latvia: encompassing a variety of themes at the interface of archaeology and the natural sciences. It is proposed to extend the list in future and regularly update it.

The name of the European water chestnut, Trapa natans L., has been chosen for its symbolic significance. Now a rare and protected species in this part of Europe, this water plant produces carbohydrate-rich nuts that made it an important food plant in the more favourable conditions at the climatic optimum – and, in consequence, a subject of mutual interest for botanists, Quaternary geologists and prehistorians.
